The Focus comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In most states, it produces 140 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque. Focus models sold in California and other select states meet the super squeaky-clean “PZEV” tailpipe emission tier; this is the case for our car, and consequently power drops slightly to 132 hp and 133 lb-ft. In instrumented testing, our four-speed-automatic-equipped Focus accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 9.7 seconds.
Nissan GT-R: Comfort
The backseat is the losing end of a 2+2 affair with very little leg- and headroom. It’s best suited for kids, and we found that two child seats will fit back there…albeit with great effort.

While “doing the math” won’t encourage the economically minded buyer to choose this diesel setup, we’re betting that the mystique and off-road superiority might just carry the day for the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited CRD. Those heading into the wilds or towing a trailer might pony up the extra money for the diesel engine, even though it will take years to pay for itself.

Thankfully, Mitsubishi has taken steps to rectify this imbalance. The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS gains a new engine, a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder mill that generates 16 more hp and 21 additional pound-feet of torque. These aren’t huge numbers, of course, but they’re enough to make the GTS competitive with the peppiest sedans in this segment. Throw in nifty options like a sternum-shaking Rockford Fosgate stereo and a navigation system with a 30-gigabyte hard drive, and you’ve got a pretty compelling package. For budget-minded consumers who think of cars as more than mere appliances, the Lancer GTS warrants a hard look.
